Golden Gloves tournament in Commerce City
More than 100 boxers are expected to compete in the 61st annual Colorado Golden Gloves Tournament scheduled today through Saturday at the Mile High Events Center in Commerce City. Included in the field are a couple of 2008 Olympic hopefuls – 19-year-old Ricky Lopez (119 pounds) of Brighton and 17-year-old Shawn Nichols (112 pounds) of Wheat Ridge.
Competition begins at 6 p.m. for today’s and Thursday’s preliminary and quarterfinal rounds. Friday’s semifinal competition and Saturday’s finals start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 (general admission) and $15 (ringside).
Former volleyball star to help Olympic bids
The U.S. Olympic Committee appointed former volleyball star Bob Ctvrtlik to the new position of vice president, international to help manage the U.S. bid process for future Olympic Games.
The USOC is expected to try to bring the 2016 Summer Games or the 2018 Winter Games to American soil. The Metro Denver Sports Commission has its eyes on the 2018 Winter Games – if the USOC approves.
