Denver police announced today that the city’s annual summer curfew begins this weekend.

The SafeNite Curfew program is an intensified curfew enforcement period, which begins Saturday, April 1, and runs through Sept. 30.

The ordinance requires that minors 17 and younger must be off the streets by midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. From Sunday through Thursday, the curfew begins at 11 p.m.

Minors caught violating curfew on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights will be taken to Denver Police Headquarters at 13th and Cherokee.

Minors will have to meet with a counselor before being released to their parent or guardian. They could be ticketed for a municipal violation, and parents and guardians are also subject to citation.

Exceptions to the ordinance include minors headed to or from work, or to an adult-supervised event, when in possession of a signed note granting permission.

The program began in 1994, as part of an effort to curb violence.
