The Book Babes were supposed to read books, not write them. But one of the founders of the wild female reading group, Betty Londergan, is out with “I’m Too Sexy for My Volvo.”
She quit the group (after they made a national TV commercial for Alpha Hydrox) and moved to Atlanta. Before that she was a partner in Thomas & Perkins in the glory days of Denver advertising.
The book is a guide for new mothers on how to stay sexy, be selfish and not overindulge your little yard monkey.
Londergan was a single mother in Denver after dating “Mister Wrong.” Her daughter is now 14. “I needed 12 years to be funny about it,” she says. “Comedy is tragedy with time.”
Many Denver people are mentioned in the book, including Mimi Kaupe, Tom and Michelle Botelho, Dr. Dean Prina. It should be a full house when she speaks at the Tattered Cover in Cherry Creek May 17. She got a write-up in Sunday’s NY Times – and I bet she starts making the rounds of talk shows. Where else are you gonna find a women telling mothers to be selfish? She even has a list of “Random Acts of Selfishness” that include: “Don’t do the laundry. Do eat the last cookie.”
Going Nuclia
Nuclia Waste, Denver’s favorite drag queen, has had it with the Rev. Fred Phelps showing up at military funerals with “God Hates Fags” signs. So she’s started her owns website with the message “God Hates Fags … That Can’t Accessorize.” Go to NucliaWaste.com. and write your own slogan.
“God has given gays and lesbians the uncanny ability to always look fabulous and to help make the rest of the world look fabulous too,” claims Waste. “It’s a gift and God would hate us if we wasted it.”
That’s one way to fight hatred.
Take it off
Brix boss Charles Master continues to plan his gala fundraiser to fight AIDS. Called “The Almost Full Monte,” Master plans to gather DJs, lotsa restaurants – and a lineup of high-profile Denver chefs and restaurateurs willing to learn a dance number and strip down to their underpants. Stay tuned for deets.
Eats
Denver Restaurant Week 2006 was a huge success – serving 54,180 specially priced multicourse dinners (2 for $52.80) at 120 restaurants.
Boulder is getting into the act with its own Restaurant Week. Food flack Kate Lacroix and publisher Josh Dinar are organizers.
“It’s in the very early stages,” says Dinar. The plan is to get about 30 Boulder eateries to serve special meals for about $26 each, in a 2006 theme. Dinar has talked to a few restaurateurs, and all are interested.
“Boulder has become a dining Mecca,” he says. And this is a great idea.
City spirit
Ellen Robinson Schwartz won best event produced for an individual at the I-Con Awards this year – and she proved it again March 24 at Asia de Cuba in NYC. The 40th birthday party for Palm bigwig Bruce Bozzi attracted the likes of Sara Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Lucy Liu, Diane von Furstenberg … Beth Hornstein got engaged to Austin, TX bf Michael Karotkin Thursday night at the new Hyatt … Sez who: “I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific.” Lily Tomlin
