A 6-year-old boy playing with matches caused $15,000 in fire damage to an apartment complex, said Westminster Fire Department spokeswoman Laura Koppel.
The boy left the smoldering pack to go to the store with his mother around noon Monday, but two other children were still in the home in the Grove Apartment Complex, in the 7100 block of Federal Boulevard.
“He thought the matchbook was out” and threw it on the floor, Koppel said. The carpet and bedding then caught fire.
The boy’s cousins, who were visiting from out of town, heard the fire alarm and left the apartment.
A neighbor called Westminster firefighters, who responded immediately to complex, where the boy lives with his mother and uncle.
