Waterfowl enthusiasts in Pueblo and Lamar will receive a preview of possible changes in duck seasons at meetings over the next two weeks.
The first will be Monday at the Pueblo State Park Headquarters, the second April 27 at the Colorado Division of Wildlife office in Lamar. Both begin at 6 p.m.
Under new U.S. Fish and Wildlife guidelines, Colorado has the option of establishing separate zones within the traditional Central Flyway framework, a kind of “seasons within the season.”
Meetings across the state are designed to explain these alternatives and gauge public opinion about how they might best meet hunter needs. Under the current liberal framework, zone tweaking may not alter hunt patterns dramatically.
“Zoning and splitting would have greater impact if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls for shorter season lengths in the future,” said Jim Gammonley, DOW avian research leader.
Safari Club award
Becky Manly, a DOW district wildlife area in the Westcliffe area since 2003, has been named wildlife officer of the year by Safari Club International. She was honored by the club at its April 8 meeting in Denver.
