Lander, Wyo. – Fire crews are starting to go home now that firefighters have contained a prescribed burn that got out of control, destroying four cabins.

Pam Wilson, a Forest Service spokeswoman for the interagency fire team, said Thursday afternoon that a containment line had been established around the 188-acre fire about 5 miles outside Lander in a wooded subdivision of mostly seasonal cabins. The fire was started by the Forest Service on Saturday.

“What we will spend the next couple of days doing is what we call gridding, where we walk through the burned area – and even some of the adjacent green, unburned area – making sure that there are no hot spots,” Wilson said.

About 100 firefighters were still fighting the fire Thursday, down from 175 on Wednesday, after two fire crews were sent home. Wilson said three more crews could be sent home today.

Firefighters continue to monitor strong winds, which helped spread the fire in the first place, but the containment efforts seemed to be working, Wilson said.
