Colorado taxes

1913: The State Tax Commission was created by the legislature. Assessed value of Colorado property for tax purposes was set at $1,306,536,692.

1919: Colorado enacts tax of 1 cent per gallon on gasoline.

1936: Voters approve the state income tax on Nov. 3.

1992: Voters pass Amendment 1 (also called the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR), an initiative that limited increases in state revenues to the annual inflation rate plus the percentage change in state population.

2005: Voters pass Referendum C, which allows state government to retain excess tax revenues for five years to fund various programs. The measure was the first successful statewide attempt at modifying TABOR.
