Jaime White, an assistant coach the past three seasons at Wyoming, was named women’s basketball coach at Northern Colorado on Thursday.
White, who was in charge of recruiting with the Cowgirls, takes the reins of a team that went 13-15 last season and was led in scoring by freshman Jabrenta Hubbard at 13.5 points a game.
White replaces Ron Vlasin, who was fired April 6 after compiling a 67-71 record over five years.
Connecticut: Coach Geno Auriemma was hospitalized for what the university called a minor condition and is expected to be released this weekend.
The school said the 52-year- old coach was at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn., but would not elaborate. The ailment was described as a non-life threatening intestinal infection by someone familiar with the coach’s health.
Academics
Men’s basketball teams at Arizona State and Texas A&M and football teams at Arizona, San Jose State, San Diego State and Northern Arizona could face the loss of scholarships next fall because of poor academic results.
The NCAA announced the Academic Progress Rates for eight schools that either didn’t report results in time for the original announcement March 1 or had appeals pending with the NCAA that did not allow results to be processed in time.
Teams would lose scholarships for one year only if their APR scores fall below a certain threshold and then have an academically ineligible athlete leave school. No team can lose more than 10 percent of its scholarship money.
San Jose State was hit hardest, with its men’s cross country, baseball, football and soccer teams making the list.
Baseball and football teams at Arizona and San Diego State also face potential sanctions.
Kansas’ baseball team also made the list while Tulane was the only new school that avoided any potential sanctions.
Final statistics for the first year of APR scores show 111 teams from 72 schools could face penalties next year. Only nine women’s teams are subject to penalties.
Tennis
Vanderbilt’s chancellor wants the NCAA to stop the influx of older foreign players who are now dominating the sport.
Chancellor Gordon Gee blames insufficient oversight, lax penalties and a rule book that is “more like the IRS tax code.” Gee said NCAA president Myles Brand has assured him the association will review the rules.
“The purpose of intercollegiate sports in this country is not about professionalism, it’s about amateurism,” Gee said.
Swimming and diving
Southern Illinois has joined the Sun Belt Conference as an associate member and will compete for the conference title with Denver, Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky.
Hockey
University of North Dakota junior defenseman Matt Smaby and sophomore forward Travis Zajac are leaving early to sign professional contracts.
