Four Colorado men’s basketball signees led Team USA-1 to two victories over teams made up of in-state players in the Joint Effort Colorado Hoops Festival on Friday and Saturday at Metro State College.
Xavier Silas, a 6-foot-4 guard from Brewster (N.H.) Academy, led the CU recruits with 19 points for the two games. Jeremy Williams, a 6-8 forward from Memphis’ Hamilton High School, totaled 18 points, and 6-6 forward Dale Vanwright of Houston Bellaire scored a total of 12 points. Point guard Dwight Thorne of Arlington (Texas) Martin scored two points in each game while concentrating on distributing the ball.
“The chemistry between us is real good,” said Silas, whose father, former NBA guard James Silas, watched from the stands.
Team USA-1 won 64-55 over Colorado-2 on Friday and 85-68 over Colorado-1 on Saturday. Providence-bound Ray Hall, a 7-footer from Mullen, combined for 28 points in the two games playing for the locals. The CU signees played about half the time.
“It was great to have our guys out here in Colorado and running at altitude for a while,” said CU coach Ricardo Patton, a spectator Saturday.
