Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman received a citation last month after a photo radar caught him speeding in a school zone.

Richard Rosenthal, the independent police monitor, reported Monday in his quarterly report on police discipline that a “chief” received an oral reprimand for the speeding incident.

Whitman on Tuesday confirmed that in March he received the radar citation for going 30 mph in a 20-mph school zone on Santa Fe Drive.

The Police Department did not release the citation, saying it needed more time to locate it.

Whitman said that in accordance with Police Department policy he didn’t have to pay the ticket because he received it while on duty. He said 69,471 people received photo radar citations last year in Denver.

“You can walk 30 miles per hour,” the chief quipped. “Now I’m going 25 miles per hour on I-25. I learned my lesson.”
