Colorado School of Mines trustees chose a retired oil company executive as the lone finalist for university president, they announced today.
Myles “Bill” Scoggins, who retired from Exxon Mobil Corporation in Houston two years ago, said he wants to bolster Mines’ financial strength, increase enrollment and push for more research dollars.
Scoggins’ petroleum engineering career began in 1970 and has taken him across the United States and overseas, including Amsterdam, London and Jakarta, Indonesia.
His higher education experience is limited to being a trustee for the University of Tulsa, his alma mater.
Board members said Scoggins’ business background suits him to run the university and that he is a good example to students.
“You take what you learn and you practice your craft,” said Michael Nyikos, president of the board of trustees. “That’s what this school has always stood for.”
