University of Colorado at Boulder interim chancellor Phil Di Stefano took himself out of consideration for the permanent job Tuesday.

DiStefano, who will return to his former position as provost of the Boulder campus, said CU needs outside leadership.

“We have had a series of homegrown chancellors, which is fine,” he said.

“But there comes a time – and I believe it is now – that selecting an outside leader will significantly benefit the campus.”

DiStefano said he talked to CU interim president Hank Brown about his decision Friday.

DiStefano was named interim chancellor to replace Richard Byyny in January 2005 as the university was dealing with football recruiting allegations involving sex and alcohol.

“We rolled up our sleeves, made some tough decisions and helped to get the campus moving in the right direction,” DiStefano said. “In talking with my close advisers, I have concluded it may be best to signal this new beginning with a fresh start.”

A national search for the next leader of the Boulder campus is ongoing, with finalists expected to be named in early May.
