Rockies first baseman Todd Helton has been diagnosed with acute ileitis, an inflammation of the small intestine, but could rejoin the team as soon as next week when his stay on the 15-day disabled list ends.
Helton spent the weekend at Rose Medical Center undergoing a battery of tests after he fell ill last week with severe abdominal pain, at which time he was placed on the disabled list.
If Helton continues to respond well to medication, he could rejoin the team this weekend in Miami and began baseball related activity.
General manager Dan O’Dowd said, “This is the best news we could have gotten.”
The team will continue to monitor Helton for a possible recurrence of the illness, since a specific cause was not determined, according to Rockies trainer Keith Dugger.
