A one-time Denver Bronco turned businessman has been indicted on charges that he defrauded investors of $145,000 with a fictitious plan to build a youth sports facility in Arvada.

William Leary, 47, of Golden, was indicted Friday on 15 felony counts of securities fraud, state authorities said Wednesday.

“This former Bronco, who appeared briefly on the 1983 roster, used this hook to take advantage of multiple victims in Colorado, Illinois and Florida,” Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said.

Leary allegedly sold fraudulent securities to investors by offering them investments in his company, MTL Inc. Authorities allege the investments were ostensibly to be used for financing an indoor youth baseball and softball training facility in Arvada. Leary also allegedly promised some investors that MTL would set up baseball camps across the country.

The investors lost about $145,000.

An arrest warrant with a $30,000 bail was issued Friday. The case was filed in Jefferson County District Court.

A call to Leary’s home was not immediately returned.
