Acapulco, Mexico – About 1,500 people, nearly all dressed in white, marched through the center of Mexico’s famous resort of Acapulco on Wednesday to protest against a wave of drug-related violence in the city.

Holding up placards with slogans such as “No More Dead!” and “Peace in Acapulco!” the protesters called on the federal government help quell the bloodshed, which has at left more than 20 people dead here since Jan. 1.

Acapulco Mayor Felix Salgado and many city officials joined the ranks of the marchers.

Most of the killings in Acapulco have been from execution-style hits and several of the victims have been police officers. Last week, the decapitated heads of two police officers were found dumped in front of a government building in the center of the city.

There have also been several grenade attacks on police stations.

Federal investigators link the violence to a turf war between drug gangs in northern Mexico for lucrative smuggling routes into the United States.
