It isn’t enough that the Arkansas River remains one of the only major streams in Colorado not yet roiled by runoff.
Running clear at approximately 450 cubic feet per second at Wellsville, just downstream from Salida, the river also is hopping with insect hatches.
Dick Anderson reports from the ArkAnglers shop in Buena Vista that the popular caddis hatch has progressed upstream to Salida and Blue-winged Olive mayflies are emerging on cloudy days up and down the river.
Anderson advises a sub-surface BWO such as the Barr Emerger between hatches. Bead-head soft hackle caddis patterns work well when fish aren’t rising to dries.
Mule deer donation
Colorado mule deer habitat has received a boost with the donation of $9,000 to the Division of Wildlife by the Colorado Mule Deer Association.
The money was part of a $45,000 auction of a special deer tag donated by the wildlife agency. The association uses the rest for enhancement programs around the state.
SCI educates kids
The Safari Club International Foundation has announced a schedule of workshops to inform educators and students about wildlife conservation and management.
An American Wilderness Leadership School facility near Jackson, Wyo., will host six workshops for educators and one for students in June, July and August. Another educator session will be in July in Minnesota.
