Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Holtzman, who threatened to boycott the state convention over concerns he would be treated unfairly when the primary ballot is decided, has decided to attend.

“We’re going because we believe we owe it to our supporters,” Holtzman spokesman Dick Leggitt said today. “We hope we’re going to be treated fairly.”

Still, Leggitt said Holtzman will continue to circulate petitions to ensure he has a spot on the primary ballot. In fact, he said, Holtzman will bring petitions to the May 20 convention.

Holtzman is running against Congressman Bob Beauprez in the GOP primary.

Leggitt said a letter will be sent to all the GOP delegates today saying “we are going to put our faith in (state Republican Party chairman) Bob Martinez.” Holtzman still has concerns about draft voting rules after several weeks of negotiations with state party officials, Leggitt said.

The newly revised rules say they are still subject to change, “which makes us a little apprehensive,” he said.

Holtzman is also concerned that details about how the agreement will be enforced have not been worked out, Leggitt said.
