It already seemed like a lucky day for Dave Platz of Broomfield and Dave Darnall of Highlands Ranch on their April 8 turkey hunt southwest of Cañon City.
After all, it isn’t often that you stumble upon an almost perfect set of 7-by-7 shed elk antlers.
But things got better from there.
While toting out the heavy beams, Platz decided to give a couple yelps on his turkey call.
“Right off, a gobbler answered just up the slope,” Platz said. “We set up quickly and he came right in.”
A little farther down the trail, the pair performed the same trick, this time with Darnall pulling the trigger.
They later called again and worked another gobbler in just for grins.
Lucky day, indeed.
