“The Other Shulman” Are you inspired by someone running in next month’s Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon, or thinking of trying one yourself? Former “Saturday Night Live” writer Alan Zweibel describes the journey of an average, overweight, midlife stationery- store owner who does just that. Reasoning that throughout his adulthood, he has gained and lost enough weight to equal a whole person, Shulman is compelled by this “other Shulman” to prepare for the New York City Marathon and his real life to follow. Written in 26.2 hilarious, tender chapters – one per marathon mile – the book explores Shulman’s challenges as he trains for (and finishes) the race. For some, it may take less time to read the book than it took Shulman to make the run (8 hours, 22 minutes, 17 seconds).

paperbackswap.com The paperback swap table in the lobby of your local library might have several dozen books, but it’s almost always hard to find something you really want. This website puts nearly a half-million books on that table, makes it searchable and lets you trade for the price of shipping. Here’s how it works: List at least nine of your own paperbacks on the site, then start receiving book credits for each one you mail to another member. (The shipper pays the $1.59 postage.) Then browse the vast library and start having paperbacks shipped to you.

The Onion Radio News podcasts

Internet radio broadcast-wise, there were two ways to start the day Tuesday: 1. “From NPR News in Washington, I’m Carl Kasell. Police in Egypt say some arrests have been made in connection with yesterday’s triple bomb attack at a beach resort in Dahab,” or 2. “It’s The Onion Radio News … Expanding universe could allow for 750 quadrillion more Blockbuster locations … I’m Doyle Redland reporting.” That shouldn’t be a hard choice. The Onion, long “America’s finest news source,” produces daily podcasts of its satirical news, read in Redland’s booming voice. Get the podcasts at iTunes, Yahoo and now even on TiVo.
