Who: Charlotte Steele of Denver, Ron and Linda Erickson of Westminster, John Steele, and Gary and Ada Keim of Arvada

Where: Metal detecting at Santa Maria Bay in the Los Cabos Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Best meal: La Casa Del Marisco in San Jose del Cabo, a locals restaurant that serves up a fabulous two-tail lobster dinner and fresh salsa made right at your table.

Best deal: Although cabs are readily available, we found the local bus service very reasonable and reliable.

Best time to go: January through March, or anytime it is cold in Denver.

Best travel tip: Be sure to take one of the many whale-watching trips offered. The Baja Peninsula and its warm lagoons are home to thousands of visiting California gray whales from January to March. The whales travel 6,000 miles from the waters off Alaska to mate and give birth in the warm waters off the Baja. A two-hour boat tour resulted in at least two dozen close-up whale sightings. The swim beaches offered the best metal detecting for our group.
