Westminster police are investigating 10 fires set in neighborhoods surrounding Standley Lake over the past three weeks.
The latest came late Wednesday, when three vehicles were entered with the intent to steal, then were set ablaze, said police spokesman Trevor Materasso.
The series of arsons began April 13, when a portable toilet was set on fire. Three trash bins have been burned and six cars.
All fires have taken place between West 100th and West 86th avenues between Wadsworth Boulevard and Simms Street. Some vehicles have had minimal damage, but others have been consumed in fire.
“The concern is that the trend is leading from nonpersonal items to a vehicle, and they are getting more brazen,” Materasso said. “We want to catch them before they up the ante and attack a building.”
The total loss from the fires, assumed to be set by two individuals, is estimated to be $30,000, Materasso said.
The fires are linked by a similar pattern, he said. The arsonists first steal valuable goods, then use random papers and materials in the car to get the fire started.
On Wednesday night, the cars’ interiors were doused in flammable liquid, Materasso said.
Arvada police have responded to two fires with similar circumstances. Westminster police, at 303-430-2400, offer a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to solving the investigation.
