Q: My boyfriend is such a slob that it makes me want to throw up sometimes. I keep asking him, telling him and yelling at him to clean up and help with stuff around the house but it’s like talking to a corpse. Should I kick him out?
SCOTT: One person’s always going to be tidier than the other but didn’t you know he was such a slob before you lived together? Maybe it was your fault and you never should’ve moved in together in the first place.
I know, shoulda, coulda…
Well you’re there now. And if he cares about making your home happy, he has to do his share of the household chores. That’s all there is to it! Be realistic and willing to settle for a happy medium, because he’s not going to transform into a domestic god overnight. Tell him it’s a serious problem and that if you’re going continue living together, he’ll have to clean up his act (pun intended). For your part, encourage him and cut him some slack.
Need I say more? Of course!
Relationships are give and give, and he has to try harder and you can’t nag him about everything all the time. I can just hear you going off. Annoying! Kindly tell him what you need and work with him on it. If you decide you can’t stand living with Pig Pen any longer, start looking at creating some domestic distance.
Against the backdrop of your disorderly abode hopefully lies a ravishing and delicious relationship.
