NSA and phone records

Re: “The resister in Denver,” May 12 news story.

Thank you, Qwest, for not turning over our phone records to the government without a warrant. It is great to see a company protecting its customers’ privacy rather than selling their personal information or giving it to the government without consent. It is ironic that the government is prosecuting companies for obtaining cellphone records without the owners’ permission, but sees no problem when it collects the same phone records without the owners’ consent or a valid warrant. I think it took a lot of courage for Qwest to stand up to the government on this issue of individual liberty with its past troubles. Keep doing the right thing, Qwest.

“United 93” movie

Since the movie “United 93” hit the theaters, I have heard comments both pro and con about not only the movie but its message as well. Letter-writer Brian Brandfas (May 9 Open Forum) demonstrates that he remains among the 31 percent still supporting an administration that has no credibility, while Felice Sage (May 11 Open Forum) demonstrates she is one of the “un-Americans” who are shamed for opposing the current administration’s smokescreens.

Regardless of which side you stand on, I suggest that if the movie industry truly released this movie to share a message of tragedy and concern, then all monies collected from the production, distribution and viewing of this movie should be distributed to the families of those lost in this tragedy In fact, perhaps Brandfas should volunteer to fight in Iraq and Sage should volunteer to assist any family member of this tragedy deal with their loss, and all would be well.

Rape reporting

Re: “Jury award for CU aide harassed by prof,” May 12 Open Forum.

While Regina Cowles of NOW is convinced Dana Reuhlman was victimized by former University of Colorado professor Igor Gamow, those of us not wedded to NOW’s ideological stance can afford to be more objective.

According to published new stories, Reuhlman claims she was “raped” 80 times by Gamow between 1995 and 1998, yet did not report any of those “rapes” until 2000. It strains credulity to believe she could not have ended these “rapes” by reporting the first one to the police immediately after it took place.

NOW politicizes rape. Reuhlman trivializes rape. Both make it more difficult for true victims of rape to receive justice.

Motorcycle awareness

I am asking everyone to please be aware of motorcycle riders. Last week a neighbor of mine was killed when a car pulled in front of him. And this week, after I went through a green light, a car pulled out from a 7-Eleven parking lot, right in front of me, almost causing me to crash into his side. I had to lock my brakes, twist the bike hard left and support all of this on one leg to keep from going under the car.

I started yelling at the driver, and pounded on his window, asking him why he was trying to kill me. A man in another car started yelling at me to leave him alone, that I had no respect for life.

I have no respect for life? I am not the one who pulled in front of someone.

So I ask everyone, please be careful, pay attention. You will walk away from a car/motorcycle wreck; the motorcycle riders are the ones who get hurt.
