The University of Colorado men’s tennis team earned its first 20-win season since 1997 and downed Arizona 4-1 on Saturday in the NCAA Tournament’s first round at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Colorado (20-8) is playing in its first NCAA Tournament since 1998. It defeated Arizona (12-10) for the first time in five tries.
CU advances to play defending national champion UCLA today at 2 p.m. The Bruins eliminated Stony Brook 4-0. The winner of the four-team region moves to the round of 16 at Stanford University starting Friday.
CU’s Marko Bundalo defeated Arizona’s Claudio Christen 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Bundalo also paired with Eric Molnar for a No. 1 doubles win over Jeff Groslimond and Christen, 8-5. The Buffs’ four points came at Nos. 3-6 singles.
CU’s Vaughn takes Big 12 10K title
Colorado’s Brent Vaughn led from start to finish to win the men’s 10,000-meter run at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Hart-Patterson Complex in Waco, Texas.
Vaughn finished in 30 minutes, 28.17 seconds. He became the first runner from Colorado to win the 10K event since Chuck Trujillo won in 1986 with a time of 31:14.63. The Colorado men’s team is in second place overall after the first day, while the women are tied for sixth. The Missouri men and Kansas State women lead the respective fields.
AFA’s Pounds sets MWC javelin mark
Air Force senior Dana Pounds won her third consecutive Mountain West Conference javelin title on the final day of the MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Clarence F. Robison Track in Provo, Utah.
Pounds threw 195 feet, 8 inches, a league record and an NCAA best this season. Pounds also held the previous best, 186-10, from April 8. Her throw was the best ever by an American collegian and the second-best in the United States this year, behind Kim Kreiner’s 199-9.
The Brigham Young men’s and women’s teams swept the titles for the third consecutive season. The Colorado State men and women each finished second. Air Force took fourth in men’s competition, and Wyoming was sixth. In the women’s ranks, Wyoming was seventh, Air Force eighth.
CSU’s Matt McKinney and Nate Heyrman swept the top spots in the men’s shot put. McKinney threw 59-9 3/4, Heyrman 58-2 1/2. The Rams’ Amanda Huddleston-Miller leaped 41-6 to win the women’s triple jump.
* Northern Colorado’s Sherown Campbell won four events and set a school record in the 200 meters to earn the men’s most outstanding athlete award at the Division I Independent Championships at Nottingham Field in Greeley. UNC finished in third place behind champion North Dakota State and runner-up Cal-Davis. The Bears’ women’s team was fifth.
CSU, DU golfers finish off the pace
Colorado State’s Chelsea Benton shot a 6-over- par 78 in the final round of the NCAA West Regional at the Washington National Golf Club and finished tied for 37th with a three-round score of 230.
Washington’s Paige Mackenzie won the regional with an 8-under 208. BYU’s Rachel Newren finished second at 216. Denver, which finished 16th, was led by Emily Hoeper, who tied for 40th at 231.
Purdue finished as the top team, with a 17-over 881. UCLA finished second at 887. The top eight teams and two individuals advance to the NCAA Championships on May 23-26 in Columbus, Ohio.
* Colorado men’s golfers Edward McGlasson and Patrick Grady are tied for third with two-round scores of 136 and the Buffaloes are in eighth place at the Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate tournament in Ardmore, Okla.
Oklahoma State led the team race, with the Cowboys’ Jonathan Moore the top individual at 130.
