U.S. 50 hosts long yard sale

The seventh annual Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale will be this weekend along the highway, which stretches from Maryland to California and is nicknamed the “loneliest road in America.”

Some towns hold the sale to promote tourism along the highway, while others raise funds for nonprofits or rent booths to individuals and businesses so they will have a place to sell their used goods. Colorado’s participating towns include Cañon City, Montrose, Poncha Springs, Salida, Cotopaxi, Rocky Ford, La Junta and Las Animas.

Our Town Cañon City, a local nonprofit organization, has organized a 4-mile stretch of the highway from First Street to Mackenzie Avenue. Spaces cost $25, which includes both days. Nonprofits are not charged for the booth rentals.

In Montrose, several businesses have rented booths, including a furniture store that will sell used and damaged wares. Sharing Ministries had items donated that will be sold to raise funds for the organization.

“There will be all kinds of things, from T-shirts to kayaks,” said Josh Liles, president of the Mount Shavano Kiwanis Club in Salida, which has organized a fundraising booth there.

REGIONAL NOTES

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Books donated to hurricane victims

The local Rotary Club collected 38,230 donated books for libraries in Terrebonne Parish, a hurricane-ravaged region of Louisiana.

“Both libraries in the parish lost all of their books, computers, furniture and supplies during Hurricane Rita,” Chan Coyle, local Rotary Club president, said.

Teaming with the Craig Rotary Club and Off the Beaten Path bookstore, the Bud Werner Memorial Library and B&K Distributing, the Steamboat Rotarians collected the books – along with about $13,000 for shipping and other library supplies – during National Library Week in early April.

The club will continue to accept tax-deductible donations at: The Yampa Valley Community Foundation/Books for the Bayou, P.O. Box 1192, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.

The beach party will feature live music by Love .45, Wendy Woo and other local bands, as well as food vendors, games and activities.

Aurora Reservoir is at 5800 S. Powhaton Road.
