An mother in Aurora has been arrested, after her seven-year-old son took a gun to school in February.

Today, Aurora police announced charges against Shantele Monique Anderson, 29.

The incident on February 13, was at Tollgate Elementary, at 701 S. Kalispell Way in Aurora.

The boy had a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, which he showed to other students over the lunch recess. One of the students he allowed to handle it dropped it, according to police, and two other boys picked up the gun, and buried it in the sand. Students notified school officials, who called police.

The boy lived with his grandmother, and police believed he came into possession of the weapon while visiting his mother, the day before the incident.

No charges were brought in the case because of a delay in learning in exactly what jurisdiction the boy’s mother lived.

Police have since learned that Anderson did, in fact, live in Aurora. She was arrested on Thursday.

Anderson has a criminal record, according to Aurora police.

She was charged by the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s office with two felonies and a misdemeanor, for permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and child abuse.

She’s being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
