INDIE COFFEE AND FILM
SML Coffee
702 E. Speer Blvd., Denver
myspace.com/smlcoffee
The recently opened SML coffee shop (as in, small, medium, large) has quickly emerged as a bright spot in the evolving around East Speer and Washington Street. Nestled into a retro modern building that was just waiting to be brought back to life, the place has personality, as well as really good coffee. And now it has a free movie series, too, every Wednesday at dusk through Sept. 13. Cult classics like “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (this week) alternate with family faves like “Toy Story” (May 31) on a screen that can be viewed from indoors or out. BYO lawn chair.
IN THE SWIM
Indoor waterpark
Inn of the Rio Grande,
U.S. 160, east of Alamosa
800-669-1658
There are going to be those days when the kids find it too cold or too hot to splash in an outdoor pool. Since February, this Alamosa hotel has filled the bill with an indoor waterpark, complete with 24-foot slide and volleyball net, as well as fountains and waterfalls in a separate kiddie pool. It’s open Tuesdays through Sundays and costs $6.50 per person. (If you’re staying at the hotel, admission is free.) There’s a snack counter, too, so you don’t have to leave the building for sustenance.
MUCH ADO ABOUT D
D @ Lannie’s
On the D&F Tower patio, 16th and Arapahoe streets, Denver
If you can’t wait until September for chef Daniel Young’s new restaurant, D, to open at 12th Avenue and Broadway, you can get a little taste on the 16th Street Mall. Nothin’ fancy, just a few salads and sandwiches flame-grilled to order. Save your appetite for late afternoon, and you can spread out under a bright umbrella, sip a cocktail and watch the workday fade away before you tuck in to a crabcake sandwich ($9) or a curried chicken pasta salad ($8.) Open 11 a.m. daily.
