Dear Scott: I have an ethical question concerning personal weblogs. As a teacher (I teach dancing), I do not allow my students to bring politics or religion into the classroom and try to make sure that everyone respects each other.
But should I restrict myself to my own blog? If I just need to rant about something, can I use my blog or just send personal e-mails to my friends (who are the only ones who read my blog currently anyway)?
Thank you
SCOTT: Normally I’d tell you it’s a free country and do whatever you want but since you’re a teacher that changes everything. When in blog doubt, follow this simple rule of thumb: if you can’t bring it into the classroom, don’t put it in your blog. Limit your opinions on politics and religion to emailing your friends. Surely they’ll understand that the nature of your job prevents you from ranting about Bush and Catholicism. Oh sorry, that’s me.
Always keep in mind that your blog is out there for everyone to see, and your friends may not be the only ones reading it, and you’ll be fine.
