Meetings and ducks
Proposals for structural changes in the eastern Colorado duck season and a discussion of the continuing South Platte Waterfowl Study will dominate two meetings involving members of the Colorado Wildlife Commission. The first, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Division of Wildlife Education Building, 6060 Broadway, will include commissioners Jeff Crawford, Rick Enstrom and newly appointed Brad Coors. The officials will discuss any wildlife issue presented by the public. Commissioner Claire O’Neal will host a similar meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Best Western Hotel in Greeley, 701 Eighth St. In addition to the public question and comment periods, DOW staff will conduct discussions of the waterfowl developments.
Elk put down
Division of Wildlife personnel on Wednesday shot a young bull elk that bumped a resident near Debeque. The animals had been fed during the winter, in violation of state wildlife law. In poor condition, it had lost its fear of humans and posed a threat to human safety.
Poacher charged
A Grand Junction resident, William Robert Howard, 34, has been charged with illegal possession of wildlife and hunting out of season in the shooting of a bull elk near Rangely in January. Acting on tips, Division of Wildlife officers identified Howard as a suspect. If convicted on all charges, he faces nine years in prison and fines up to $314,000.
