A 17-year-old East High School graduate who was run over on prom night by a limousine was resting Tuesday after surgery, according to her family’s Web log.
Molly Bloom remained in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center.
“Today, Molly made eye contact with all of us,” her mother wrote on mollyspage2006.blogspot.com. “She made me laugh with a facial gesture that she always made as a little girl, and she even smiled once. Somehow, I feel that Molly is going to be the one who knows what really constitutes a human being, and we will learn from her.”
Over the weekend, Bloom’s family hung her cap, gown and tassel in her hospital room to celebrate her graduation from East High School.
On May 13, Bloom was boarding a Hummer limousine when it began moving before she was fully inside. She was pulled under the rear tire, mangling her left leg, which doctors later amputated.
The driver of the limo, Stanley D. Sample, was not supposed to be in contact with minors under the conditions of his probation because he has convictions for sex assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
An executive of 5th Avenue N Style Limousine has said Sample claimed his probation officer allowed him to drive minors.
Sample was only granted permission to drive adults in limousines, said Robin Leaf, chief probation officer.
“His probation officer told him he could not do driving for proms and things like that,” Leaf said. “He was allowed no contact whatsoever. Whether he told his employer or not, I don’t know. But clearly, he knew that.”
Sample, 38, was arrested for violating the terms of his probation in Arapahoe County but posted a $25,000 bond Friday. He is due back in court for a probation-revocation hearing June 22. Sample could not be reached for comment.
Sample also has a prior drunken-driving conviction, but Denver police said alcohol wasn’t a factor in the prom- night accident.
