Scarcely anyone might oppose the notion of improving the nation’s aquatic resources as a way of ensuring and restoring fish populations.

The trouble always has come in launching the proper comprehensive plan to make it happen. Now comes the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, an initiative that coordinates the efforts of federal and state agencies with leading conservation groups.

“This is a historic day for the organizations dedicated to making sure we have healthy fish and other aquatic creatures for years to come,” Lynn Scarlett, acting secretary of interior, said at a Washington, D.C., ceremony.

This program will support many existing plans and partnerships under an umbrella that allows activists to better measure and communicate the status of various species. It encourages sustainable action and accountability while providing for long-term investments that might promote better results.

More than 450 organizations have signed on for the action plan, including the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, which represents state wildlife bodies such as the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
