Amid commitments to work on immigration issues and education reform former Denver Mayor Federico Pena is also making a more personal commitment.
He and girlfriend Cindy Velasquez are engaged and will marry in the next three months.
Pena proposed to Velasquez, former general manager of Channel 7 news, about three weeks ago.
“We’ve just been telling our friends and family members,” he said. “Now we are narrowing down the dates.”
The pair has been together for three years. She recently helped edit a speech Pena gave at the May 1 “We are America” march for immigrants and supporters.
He had this to say about his fiancé’s help with the presentation last week: “(She) was very helpful to me, she’s a great editor and a thoughtful person.”
Pena has re-emerged onto the political scene after several years of focusing on his family and business. He is the chairman of Keep Colorado Safe, a campaign against a proposed ballot initiative that would curtail state services to undocumented immigrants.
The former Clinton Cabinet member was previously married to Ellen Hart Pena for 12 years. They divorced in 2000 and have three children together.
