Lakewood real estate agent William Mendez was sentenced Wednesday to 49 months in federal prison for his role in an alleged mortgage fraud scheme.
Mendez, 41, pleaded guilty in March to wire fraud and money laundering in the scam.
As part of the plea agreement he will pay $1.2 million in restitution to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also agreed not to work again in real estate or mortgage lending.
A federal grand jury indicted Mendez and Claudia M. Mendez in September.
Several others also have been indicted in the alleged scheme involving the Mendez Team real-estate agency.
They allegedly falsified documentation to illegally obtain home loans for people who did not qualify.
