The Denver Center Theatre Company has garnered 34 nominations for the Colorado Theatre Guild’s inaugural Henry Awards, which will celebrate excellence in Colorado theatre at a gala June 19 at the New Denver Civic Theatre.
The DCTC’s nominations represent 36 percent of all Henrys nominations, which cover the 2005-06 theater season ending May 31, and also corresponds with artistic director Kent Thompson’s first year as DCTC artistic director.
The Curious Theatre Company followed with 13 nominations, the Arvada Center with 12 and Boulder’s Dinner Theatre with eight. In all, 12 companies received nods. The nominees for best season are Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Curious, the DCTC and a wild-card – the new Modern Muse Theatre Company, which received only one other nomination among the Henrys’ 20 categories.
The Henrys are named after retired theater producer Henry Lowenstein.
To be eligible, a theater company must have been a member of the CTG and a production must have had at least 12 performances. If the play was presented in the seven-county metro area, it had to have been seen by at least three of five invited judges – Lisa Bornstein of the Rocky Mountain News, Mark Collins of the Boulder Daily Camera, David Marlowe of Out Front and Life On Capitol Hill, John Moore of The Denver Post and Juliet Wittman of Westword. If it was staged outside the metro area, it had to have been seen by two judges.
These restrictions pared the list of eligible productions to only 74 – 11 of them by the DCTC.
