Jacob Yator of Chapel Hill, N.C., held off Boulder’s Andrew Letherby in a sprint to the finish to win the elite men’s division of the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon on Sunday in Denver.
Yator and Letherby both recorded a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 11 seconds, but Yator was awarded the win.
Boulder’s Luminita Talpos won the elite women’s division in 1:14:20 after outpacing Erie’s Constantina Dita-Tomescu, the world’s top-ranked female road runner, according to the IAAF. Dita-Tomescu finished in 1:15.06. Longmont’s Mikie Takanaka finished third in 1:17:09.
“She really pushed me,” Talpos said of Dita-Tomescu, her teammate and a fellow Romanian. “Last year I ran alone and won, but my time was not as good. Having Constantina running next to me made me run much faster.”
Bangert fourth in mountain-bike downhill
Cole Bangert of Twin Lakes rode to a fourth-place finish in the pro men’s downhill race at the National Mountain Bike Series competition in Sugar Mountain, N.C. Australian Sam Hill topped a field of 49 riders with a time of 3 minutes, 28.7 seconds.
On Saturday, Boulder’s Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski won the men’s cross country race. His time of 2:04:59.12 topped a field of 65. Colorado Springs’ Nick Waite finished fifth.
Nebraska’s Gorsett earns another plaudit
Nebraska outfielder Luke Gorsett, a graduate of Denver’s Thomas Jefferson High School, earned District VII player of the year honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
