From early mountaineering sweaters to Tour de France race jerseys, wool has long been recognized as performance fiber. But merino wool is evolving. Sure, it still comes off the backs of New Zealand merino sheep, but Steamboat Springs-based SmartWool has developed methods to modify the fibers for different fabric applications. The result is Microweight VersaWear, and soft, light shirts like the long-sleeved Bent Crew (MSRP: $70) and the short-sleeved Swoop Tee ($67.50). Made from 100 percent jersey knit, the Bent Crew is made for those transition times in the mountains – spring, fall, morning and evening – when the sun isn’t warming the Earth. The Swoop Tee, complete with a drop-tail hem and hidden side pocket, slips in on warmer days or as an extra layer when the going gets cool.
