The death of a 42-year-old man on Sunday has prompted authorities to issue a warning that lightning season has begun in Colorado.
The victim was killed by lightning as he walked to his car outside the Mile Hi Flea Market in Henderson about 3:45 p.m. He was taken to North Suburban Hospital where he died.
At the time of the incident, a severe storm with lightning and rain was passing through the area.
Colorado ranks third in the nation for fatalities related to lighting strikes after Florida and Texas. From 1990 to 2003, 39 people were killed in Colorado by lightning, according to the National Lightning Safety Institute.
“This is an unfortunate incident, and our prayers go out to the family,” Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr said in a statement on Monday. “Citizens need to be aware of the potential danger during a storm that is producing lightning.”
At the first notice of lightning or thunder, go into a building or a vehicle, Adams County officials advised. Lightning often precedes rain, so don’t wait for the rain to begin before suspending activities.
If outside, avoid water, high ground and open spaces. Metal objects, including electric wires, fences, machines, motors and power tools also should be avoided.
Canopies, picnic tables, rain shelters or trees are not safe shelter.
If lightning strikes nearby, crouch down, put feet together and place hands over ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder. Avoid getting within 15 feet of other people.
The Adams County coroner has not positively identified the man who died. He was carrying a foreign ID card, but fingerprints will be examined before his name is released.
