Former Denver Post defensive player of the year Jesse Nading is one of 42 candidates on the Ted Hendricks watch list for the nation’s top defensive end. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound junior from ThunderRidge will be a third-year starter for the Rams. Broncos draft pick Elvis Dumervil of Louisville won the award last season.
New Colorado State athletic director Paul Kowalczyk was named central region Division I-AA athletic director of the year for his accomplishments at Southern Illinois. Before taking over at CSU last month, Kowalczyk ran the department for a school that finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference all-sports standings in 2004-05. Kowalczyk also established the school’s athletic scholarship fund. – Natalie Meisler
Soule, Tolan, Franks qualify for PubLinx
Charles Soule of Longmont, who plays for the University of Denver, shot a 70 in Tuesday’s final round for a 7-under-par 135 total and medalist honors in qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Mira Vista Golf Course in Aurora.
Also qualifying, in a playoff, were University of Colorado player Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch and Jeff Franks of Steamboat Springs. The Public Links will be held July 10-15 at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton, Wash.
No. 1 seed advances at Denver City Open
Jeremy Wurtzman, the No. 1 seed in men’s open singles, advanced from the round of 32 at the Denver City Open at the Denver Tennis Club, defeating Taylor Brown 6-1, 6-0. The No. 2 seed, Bart Scott, also advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brandon Beauvais, as did No. 3, Cory Ross, with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Erik Kreutzer.
