Sun Microsystems laid off 122 workers from its Broomfield and Louisville campuses today, according to the Colorado Department of Labor.
The cuts fall far below expectations of 500 to 800 jobs reported Wednesday. Sun employs 4,700 in Colorado and 37,500 worldwide.
According to labor department spokesman Bill Thoennes, Sun sent a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) notice informing of 50 cuts at the Broomfield campus and 72 in Louisville, or the StorageTek site. Sun acquired StorageTek last June.
Sun officials said that today marked the first in a series of deadlines for managers to inform employees of staff reductions. On May 31, Sun CEO announced job cuts of up to 5,000 over the next six months.
