Failure to Launch ** 1/2|Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this romantic comedy – directed by “Shanghai Noon’s” Tom Dey – that hopes to wrench the guy demographic away from its Game Boys – girlfriends in tow. Manly, yes, but she’ll like it too. Tripp (McConaughey) and friends Demo and Ace are grown men still living comfortably with their folks. During a visit with friends who rediscovered their friskiness once their son was out of the house, Tripp’s parents (Kathy Bates and football great Terry Bradshaw) hire consultant Paula (Parker) to coax their big bird from the too cozy nest they’ve provided him. Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper make good friend foils to Tripp and Paula’s main-attraction fireworks.|PG-13|105 minutes|Released today|Lisa Kennedy
Why We Fight ** 1/2|Eugene Jarecki has made a slick documentary opposing the current occupation of Iraq, but it doesn’t quite live up to his bold title. Why we as a nation continue to fight wars is a broad question whose answers lie outside attacks on Bush administration policies; too often Jarecki falls back onto standard liberal arguments and images to make scattered points.|PG-13|98 minutes|Released today|Michael Booth
Imagine Me & You ** 1/2|You’ve seen this fairy-tale version of modern London before, where all the people are young and beautiful, the houses big, the weather appropriately atmospheric. The twist is a newlywed woman falling for another woman. Makes for an enjoyable, if not very interesting, romantic comedy.|R|95 minutes|Released today|Michael Booth
Madea’s Family Reunion * 1/2|Tyler Perry’s heart is in the right place, but he still has a tin ear. The same tonal problems that plagued last year’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” resurface in “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion.” Perry has a message of empowerment and self-respect that’s not just important for women to hear, it’s essential. He also has a few choice words for the men in the audience: Stand by your women and your families. Unfortunately, all that too often gets muddled in his mess of a screenplay. “Madea’s Family Reunion” is the only movie you’ll see this year that features protracted flatulence jokes, a plot twist involving child molestation, and a poetry recital by Maya Angelou. |PG-13|107 minutes|Released today|Christy Lemire, Associated Press
