A 2-year-old boy fell into a pond at a southeast Denver apartment complex and drowned Tuesday afternoon.

The toddler was apparently playing with at least one other child when he fell into the pond, which is part of the landscaping at the Twin Lake Towers apartments at 8680 E. Alameda Ave., authorities said.

Police are investigating why such a small child was unattended long enough to fall in the water, said Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson and Fire Department spokeswoman Heather Green.

The 911 call came in at 3:23 p.m., they said.

A playmate alerted the boy’s mother that he had fallen in the pond, and she pulled him out and tried to revive him, Jackson said.

Green said police officers, who arrived first, scooped the boy up and delivered him to arriving firefighters who tried to resuscitate him.

The boy was taken by ambulance to the Medical Center of Aurora where he was pronounced dead at 3:58 p.m., Green said.

“The police are investigating where was the mother. Was she there? Was she in her apartment? Was she up the embankment? We don’t know,” Green said.

No names were released.
