
University of Colorado senior Katie Griffin was named to the U.S. Under-21 women’s national soccer team that will compete in the Nordic Cup from July 16-22 in Stavanger, Norway, coach Jillian Ellis said Wednesday.
Griffin, who ranks second on the Buffaloes’ all-time leading scorer list with 27 goals, was a Big 12 freshman of the year in 2003 and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-region selection last season.
The U.S. has won seven straight Nordic Cup titles.
Pounds, Winger in Dominican Republic field
Two-time NCAA javelin champion Dana Pounds of Air Force and Pine Creek High School graduate Russ Winger, a shot putter, will be among those competing at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association U-23 Track and Field Championships beginning today at the Panamerican Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Pounds will attempt to defend her 2004 NACAC javelin title. Winger, of the University of Idaho, was a second-place finisher at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
