COPENHAGEN, Denmark-
The 28th edition of Copenhagen's Jazz Festival was set to kick off Friday, filling the capital city's streets and squares, pubs and concert halls with swing, bebop, Brazilian and African rhythms and avant-garde tunes.
The program for the nine-day festival include performances by regular festival fixtures Dianne Reeves and Herbie Hancock, and Trio Beyond, among hundreds of famed and lesser known artists.
The 1960s and 1970s Brazilian legend Sergio Mendes who currently is attempting a comeback, is to play at Copenhagen's Tivoli's amusement park on Saturday while Salif Keita of Mali will fill the city's new Opera House with African rhythms on July 15.
Considered one of northern Europe's main jazz events among aficionados, the festival also will feature homegrown talents–from legendary 90-year-old violinist Svend Asmussen to pianist Carsten Dahl and trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg.
