Orlando Hudson and Luis Gonzalez homered, and the Arizona Diamondbacks scored five runs in the seventh inning to beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5 Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.
Craig Counsell went 3-for-4 and Chad Tracy had three hits and two RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who finished with 13 hits. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Colorado pushed across two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead before Arizona responded in the seventh.
Chris Snyder and Jeff DaVanon chased starter Aaron Cook from the game with one-out singles and the Rockies’ bullpen couldn’t hold the 5-2 lead from there.
Tom Martin relieved Cook and faced one batter, allowing a single to Counsell to load the bases. Scott Dohmann (1-1) took over for Martin and walked Eric Byrnes to bring home a run.
Manager Clint Hurdle kept the procession of relievers going by bringing in Ray King for Dohmann. King gave up an RBI single to Tracy and then Hurdle brought in Jose Mesa, who surrendered a long fly to Conor Jackson that Matt Holliday dropped for an error, allowing two runs to score.
Gonzalez singled home Tracy for the fifth run of the inning before pinch-hitter Tony Clark hit into a 3-6-3 double play.
Hudson added a solo shot in the eighth, his eighth of the season.
Gonzalez hit a 2-1 pitch from Cook over the right-field fence in the second for his seventh home run. Cook had allowed only one home run in his last four starts coming into Sunday’s game. Cook went 6 1-3 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs.
The Rockies had four straight extra-base hits to begin the sixth after Arizona put in Randy Choate for starter Juan Cruz.
Cory Sullivan started things off with a triple, and then Todd Helton doubled him home. Choate was relieved by Edgar Gonzalez, who gave up RBI doubles to Holliday and Garrett Atkins to make it 5-2.
Cruz was making his second start after spending most of June on the disabled list for a sore right shoulder. The right-hander, who wasn’t inserted into the starting rotation until late April, allowed two hits and two runs in five innings. Cruz also walked two and struck out five.
Gonzalez (1-2) worked one inning to get the win and Jorge Julio pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.
The Rockies could only manage a first-inning single off Cruz until the fifth inning. After Yorvit Torrealba drew a one-out walk, Clint Barmes hit an 0-1 pitch from Cruz into the left-field bleachers to make it 2-2.
Thanks to a heads-up slide by Counsell, the Diamondbacks added a run in the third. Counsell, who had a one-out bloop single and was advanced to second on a groundout by Byrnes, was beaten home by Sullivan’s throw from center on Tracy’s single.
Counsell slid around the plate to avoid Torrealba as he fielded the ball, and then reached back to touch the tip of home plate.
