Perhaps it’s only fitting that an eating and drinking establishment with such rich historic ties to waterfowl hunting should be headquarters for a prominent duck- and goose-calling contest. Bruce’s Bar in Severance and its longtime owner, Bruce Ruth, are famous for two things: providing pits and blinds for hunting and serving up steaming platters of the delicacy commonly called Rocky Mountain oysters.
Now, on July 29-30, it will host the second annual Stillwater Classic calling contest, an event that offers prizes in open, youth and novice categories. It begins at 9 a.m. on July 29 with junior competition, followed by novice goose competition at 2 p.m. Adult callers will compete July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Youths quack for free; adults will pay $20, $30 or $40 per entry.
