On the last day for several Colorado Albertsons and Grocery Warehouse stores, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union protested, saying the company hasn’t treated employees fairly during the closures.
Dave Minshall, a spokesman for UFCW Local No. 7, said Sunday that some workers have not received severance pay after the stores where they worked closed. Minshall said employees also aren’t sure whether senior workers seeking transfers to the remaining stores have been given priority over junior workers, as is required in the union contract.
“The whole thing is just kind of questionable and frustrating at this point,” said Deb McCoy, who worked at the now-closed Northglenn Albertsons and has been transferred to the Montbello store.
Albertsons representatives could not be reached for comment Sunday.
In June, a group of investors led by Cerberus Capital Management bought Albertsons and Grocery Warehouse stores in Colorado. The company then announced it would close 16 of its 58 Colorado stores. The last day for those stores was Sunday, Minshall said.
