Fieldwork

Heavy hitters

It was crunch time, and the crunching lasted forever. Monday morning, the Broncos went through their longest and most physical workout among their first seven practice sessions. It was an intense, two-hour, 35-minute workout in full pads for the first time in this camp. The Broncos’ special teams practiced in the afternoon. More long morning workouts are scheduled for Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Several pass plays highlighted the morning workout. New receiver Javon Walker was spectacular and showed no aftereffects of the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last September while playing for the Green Bay Packers. Fellow starting receiver Rod Smith also looked crisp, and both meshed well with starting quarterback Jake Plummer, who is quietly having a strong camp.

Cutler watch

Like father, like son

Boy, those Cutlers look alike. The father of rookie quarterback Jay Cutler – Denver’s first-round pick from Vanderbilt – was on Denver’s sideline Monday morning along with a family friend. Father and son are dead ringers.

Biography

Rookie catches on

No. 19 is in town again, but this time he is trying to stick past the preseason. Unlike Jerry Rice – who wore No. 19 in training camp last year – wide receiver Brian Clark wants to be around awhile. The undrafted free agent from N.C. State has worked hard early and looked good. He has a good work ethic, often drilling on plays after practice with QB Bradlee Van Pelt.

The point after

Writer wide left

The pressure was on diminutive No. 9, Stefan Fatsis. A Wall Street Journal reporter, Fatsis is in camp with Denver while writing a book. The evening plans of the players were riding on the foot of Fatsis, who has been working out with the team’s kickers. In the morning, coach Mike Shanahan gathered his players and told them that he would end meetings 30 minutes early Monday night if Fatsis could nail a 30-yard field goal. The first attempt by Fatsis bounced off the crossbar. In a good mood, Shanahan moved Fatsis in another 5 yards. With the players around him, Fatsis lined up for the 25-yard attempt but was wide left much to the chagrin of the players, who were counting on escaping early.
