Before they learn how to break the huddle, Colorado State’s incoming freshmen will set up shop in a new locker room that was originally promised to last year’s seniors.
The Rams’ locker room, with its big-screen television lounge and air conditioning in time for grueling August practices, officially opened last week. It is named for former CSU star Joey Porter, a Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker who underwrote half of the $400,000 project. Bid delays postponed the start of the project until January.
The Rams’ 22 newcomers report today for academic orientation and a barbecue with the coaching staff. Veterans report Wednesday, and everyone takes the field Thursday morning. CSU signed 22 high school players and one junior college transfer in February. All are expected to report except for one academic casualty, defensive lineman Anthony Jones of Plant City, Fla.
The Rams will practice in shorts and helmets Thursday to Monday, take a break Tuesday for media day and begin full- contact practices Aug. 9.
