Monarch second baseman Joe Ray went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, but it wasn’t enough for the Colorado American Legion champions Saturday as the Coyotes lost 7-4 to Bishop Gorman (53-11) of Las Vegas at the Legion Western Regional in Albuquerque.
Monarch (47-10), which won the state title last week in Boulder, fell to 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament after victories against California state champion Auburn and the host Albuquerque 49ers. Monarch will play Kalani (23-2) of Honolulu today at 9 a.m. in an elimination game. The regional champion advances to the Legion World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, starting Friday.
Monarch shortstop Wade Landowski is 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate in the tournament, with two homers, two doubles and 10 RBIs.
Kent Denver standout Lewis commits to DU
Kyle Lewis, a senior at Kent Denver in Cherry Hills Village, verbally committed to play basketball at the University of Denver. A 5-foot-9 guard, Lewis was Class 3A second team all-state by The Denver Post the past two seasons.
- Jeremy Rankin, who will be a sophomore at Overland in Aurora, last month won USA Track and Field’s Junior Olympic national championship in the 100 meters in record time. Competing in Baltimore, Md., Rankin surpassed a 19-year mark by winning a qualifying heat in 10.51 seconds. He won the final in 10.58.
