The Nuggets will hold training camp in Durango at Fort Lewis College on Oct. 3-7, the team announced Wednesday.

“It’s a beautiful setting, and being away from home will give our team an opportunity to bond,” Nuggets coach George Karl said.

It’s the first time the Nuggets will train outside of Denver since 1998-99, when the team held camp in Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets’ newest acquisition, Joe Smith, was in town Wednesday for a news conference.

“The way we are balancing our roster, getting another quality big guy made him attractive,” Karl said. “We had a successful season last year because of the depth of our big guys. Francisco (Elson) and Eddie (Najera), didn’t play a lot, and then they had to play. Joe adds another quality big guy.”

The Nuggets sent Ruben Patterson to Milwaukee for Smith, 31. Smith was bothered by knee troubles last season and averaged 8.6 points.

“I thought it was a pretty good situation for me. I mean team-wise, coach-wise, organization-wise and obviously, this is a big year for me,” Smith said. “And a year where I expect big things. I thought that this could be a good fit for me.”
